How to Maintain Clean Windows (and mirrors)

In-between our visits you may need to spot-clean your windows. Here are a few tips:

Light Fingerprinting

Yes, we all know that glass doors have a handle to open and shut them from. But still we all occasionally (husbands especially) put our hands on the glass. Husbands relax! Fingerprints can be really easy to remove, even before your wife notices.

How to remove light fingerprints.

Equipment

  • 1 Glass Cloth (it’s important to use a clean microfibre cloth that isn’t holding onto a lot of dust)
  • Water

Method

Step 1: Add a very small amount of water to a small section of the glass cloth. The cloth should be just slightly damp. (If your cloth is dripping, you will also have to mop the floor and the whole quick and easy process has turned into an ordeal!).

Step 2: Wipe the fingerprints with the slightly damp section of your cloth (you may need to apply a little pressure).

Step 3: Polish the glass with the dry section of the glass cloth until there are no smudges left.

Step 4: Stand back and admire your work.

Faceprints/raspberries

Your parents did it, you did it, and now your kids are doing it. Blowing raspberries on freshly cleaned windows. Kids see freshly cleaned windows as a canvas to express their creativity. To handle this, we will need to up the ante, just a little.

Step 4: Use the other side of the towel to wipe away any residue.

Step 5: Polish the glass with the dry glass cloth until there are no smudges left (Wiping glass in only one direction can help with this).

Step 6: Celebrate your success.

Dried pet smears / finger smears / generally gross smears

Is it just me or have you noticed that pets love clean glass? It’s like a magnet to them and their slobber. Have you also noticed that smear is a gross word too? Smear…

The following tip will also help with ice-cream fingerpainting’s, BBQ grease splatter, bird poop, bug poop, (pretty much all kinds of poop) and other generally gross crud.

Equipment

  • 1-2 terry cloths
  • Dish-washing liquid
  • 1 glass scraper with fresh blade (IMPORTANT: only use a scraper blade if your glass does not have any tinting or protective films and avoid using blades on mirrors)
  • 1 microfibre glass cloth

Method

Step 1: Dampen the terry towel and add a generous amount of dishwashing liquid onto one section of the cloth.

Step 2: Moisten up the affected area of glass ensuring that it is well lubricated by soapy water.

Step 3: Gently apply the scraper blade to the glass and scrape away the dried smears ensuring that you do not apply too much pressure (and always scrap away from yourself with your other hand well out of the way to avoid injury).

Step 4: Use the other side of the terry towel (or a fresh terry towel if needed) to wipe off the residue until all that is left is damp glass.

Step 5: Polish the glass with the dry glass cloth until there are no smudges left (Wiping glass in only one direction can help with this).

Step 6: Send your friends before and after pics to brag about how awesome your window cleaning skills are.
